When distributing licenses across multiple servers, the goal is to maximize utilization and avoid idle resources. The following guidelines will help you allocate licenses efficiently:
Key Principle
Do not let a server sit idle. Assign licenses based on the actual workload patterns to ensure every server is performing useful tasks at all times.
License Allocation Guidelines
Assess Job Overlap
Identify which tasks cannot run simultaneously on the same machine.
Example: If export jobs do not run while ingestion is running, you can assign both Ingestion and Export licenses to the same server.
Optimize for Continuous Usage
If a server is fully utilized during certain operations, assign it a number of licenses equal to the total number of cores on the machine. Optionally, you can allocate one fewer license to leave some headroom for read/write operations.
Example: A server primarily running ingestion 24×7 can be assigned only ingestion licenses. There is no need for additional licenses for other jobs if the server will never be idle with ingestion.
Combine Licenses Strategically
Look for complementary workloads to combine on a single machine.
Example combinations:
Ingestion + Export (if they never run simultaneously)
Imaging + OCR (if they can run together without performance degradation)
This ensures the machine is always performing useful work.
Monitor and Adjust
Review server utilization regularly.
Reallocate licenses to servers that tend to remain idle most of the time.
